Sound Stage

I went to the stew gallery on the 4th of March at 10:00 in the morning to catch Matt and Siobhans show called 'sound stage'. The event was held on the 3rd which meant i was unable to attend due to work commitments. I walked in and could hear a camera clicking noise the sort of noise they use in the movies. It was Matt desperately taking as many photos as he could to document the event. It was strange to think how different the experience would have been if the room was full of people, reason being the theme was 'domestic'. I was immediately drawn to the area that was lit in red. I think it was supposed to be a kind of bedroom themed area. There was a low bed which had a block of ice sitting in the middle of it. In a bedroom water is always contained either in a glass, a hot water bottle or a radiator. It wasn't the warmest night so was interesting to still be able to see some ice, but most of it had turned to water. I like the idea that the bedroom was wet because you NEVER want a damp room mind a slightly flooded room. You would also normally take a hot water bottle to bed not a block of ice. I noticed the red hot water bottle that was placed out of context against a white wall just to add to the the bedroom theme i guess.
As i walked on through i noticed that the space was filled really well and where ever i looked was something slightly different and new. The second space i believed to be the kitchen. The first object being a wooden chair balancing on Coffey cups. This took every function away from the chair, this i found very tempting. It is a very restricting piece and added to the idea of the kitchen being restricted due to it being in a gallery. Looking for water (because its a kitchen) and i cant find any. Instead there is a video playing on the wall at about the height of a sink but larger. It is out of focus but you can however make out the taps and tiles. It stays out of focus until you start to see the soap bubbles slowly rise up and begin to overflow. This piece for me talks about expectation. We wait and wait and finally the bubbles spill over the edge onto the floor which we again expect to be flooded before noticing and reminding our selves we are watching a video.
Through to the last part of the gallery and there is a room with a string bathroom light hanging and knocking against a tiled wall. It was projected onto the far wall about as big as a Small cinema screen. This made the area very obvious compared to the others. There was a circle on the floor made of talc again adding to the bathroom theme. The mirrors on the floor also related to the room theme. It was however strange to see them on the floor but i liked the way they therefore lost there reflective purpose for vanity and were instead used to create a reflection of light on the wall.
